EF Posthuset
Design in harmony with the urban landscape
In Værløse, a former post office site has been transformed into modern residential housing. The EF Posthuset project, designed by the architectural firm Urban Agency, features a vibrant facade made with cladding tiles from Fornace S.Anselmo. In addition to creating delicate shadow effects, the cladding tiles have provided architects with greater flexibility in the design of the buildings.
A new, modern residential complex now occupies the site where the town's old post office once stood. The development connects the town center to the nearby train station. The cladding tiles adorn the facade, clad in Sk1n PG – a classic red tile finish with subtle variations in glossy and matte shades of red. The EF Posthuset development, designed by Urban Agency, boasts not only a classic red-tile facade but also offset building volumes, sloping recesses around balconies, and varied heights.
While the building is tallest near the station, the floors gradually step down toward the town center. This variation in height allows the architecture to respond dynamically to its surroundings. Henning Stüben, architect and partner at Urban Agency, explains how the cladding tiles enabled the creation of the sculptural facade: “The cladding tiles were chosen for the project because they provided the necessary flexibility for the design. Since they are lighter than traditional bricks, we were able to easily create the geometric shifts and overhangs that are so characteristic and essential to the project’s architectural expression.”
The cladding tiles were designed with a U-profile that adds pronounced relief and a more dynamic facade. Henning Stüben says: “The U-profile results in more significant shadow effects due to the larger overlap between tiles, creating a livelier expression. We played with shadows across the entire structure, particularly in the loggias of the residences, which harmonizes beautifully with the ever-changing appearance of the tiles.”
The new residential development on the former post office site connects the train station and the nearby social housing to one side with the town center to the other, using red tiles as a unifying material.
“Since the center of Værløse is paved with red tiles, it was natural to select tile as the primary material to respect the urban space and surrounding architecture. Additionally, the use of red tiles throughout EF Posthuset creates a cohesive architectural impression,” concludes Henning Stüben.
Besides the choice of materials, the sculptural design of the residences contributes to their seamless integration with the surroundings. This is evident in the offset base of the new residential complex, which has also become a distinctive landmark that symbolizes Værløse.
