Timeless Design in Dialogue with Nature

On a gently sloping one-acre lot in Rollingwood stands the Inwood Residence, by A Parallel Architecture. This award-winning Austin studio was chosen by the homeowners to create a serene and peaceful retreat seamlessly connected to the verdant surroundings they cherished.

The family sought a design that addressed their practical needs while ensuring both privacy and the feeling of immersion in the lush green hills overlooking West Austin. Additionally, they desired a timeless space, tired of the aging structures they had previously lived in or observed around them.

To fulfill these aspirations, the house was constructed using durable, low-maintenance materials with long life cycles, embodying a sense of well-crafted quality. The exterior features locally sourced, FSC-certified wood siding, complemented by weathering steel and brick masonry.

For the brickwork were selected our Corso Terra bricks; characterized by their minimalist, smooth finish, these bricks not only provide a sense of refinement and durability but also establish a profound connection to the surrounding natural and urban environment. This harmonious blend enabled the seamless dialogue between interior and exterior spaces envisioned for the home.

Privacy was carefully addressed by incorporating low, hunkered brick walls that shield the children’s bedrooms and discreetly conceal the garage from public view without dominating the landscape. Flanking the centrally located entrance, a wood-and-glass sleeping wing appears to float above the landscape, nestled delicately within the tree canopy lining the creek below. A secondary glass wing extends towards the panoramic views, offering stunning 180-degree vistas from the kitchen, living, and dining areas. Below, a family den, screened porch, and covered patio are thoughtfully tucked into the design, effectively doubling the usable space while maintaining a seamless integration with the natural surroundings.

Every element of this project was meticulously planned and selected to ensure the home stands the test of time, embodying the family’s vision of a tranquil, enduring retreat in harmony with nature.
